BUILDING A STRONGER HELENA STARTS WITH FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The long-term success of any organization depends on its financial health, and municipal government is no exception. In fact, the stakes are even higher. When a private business struggles, customers can simply choose another option. But when a city faces financial instability, it’s the residents, our families, friends, and neighbors, who feel the impact. It’s not just an inconvenience; it’s about quality of life, access to services, and the future of the place we all call home.
As a retired CPA with extensive experience, I understand the complex dynamics of budgeting, financial planning, and long-term sustainability. Our city needs someone at the helm who not only values fiscal responsibility but also knows how to implement it. Financial responsibility isn’t just a line item; it’s the foundation that supports every service and vision we have for Helena.
After reviewing the 2024 city audit , my concerns about Helena’s financial position were confirmed. Addressing this challenge head-on will be my top priority from day one. To secure Helena’s future, we must fully understand where we are today, what obligations we’ve already committed to, and what, if any, surplus exists to meet future needs.
Right now, that clarity simply doesn’t exist. One thing that we do know is our city has entered into approximately $45M in bonds that will increase our annual debt service to almost $2.3M this year, over $2.7M in 2026 and 2027, and beginning in 2028 will be just shy of $3.5M. The debt services will not drop below $3M until 2043, and we have no idea how it going to be paid! Just to put this in perspective, this is in excess of 15% our annual revenues at best, and our city has been running very lean for the 22 years that I have lived here.
Focusing on fiscal sustainability doesn’t mean neglecting other vital areas. Over the past six months, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with many of Helena’s dedicated city employees. Their commitment to our community is unwavering, and they want what we all want: a city that thrives.
What I’ve heard time and again from both staff and citizens is a need for clear communication and true transparency. Fortunately, those don’t cost a dime, they just require commitment and consistency. As your future mayor, I won’t make promises I can’t keep. But here’s what I will promise: when you reach out with a question, concern, or suggestion, you’ll get a timely response. No more being left in the dark.
I also believe deeply in tapping into the incredible talent that exists right here in Helena. Our community is full of passionate, skilled individuals who are ready to get involved. The only way to ensure Helena’s future is to harness the talent, dedication, work ethic, and sense of community that has carried us to where we are today.
